Something fun and interesting: What do you do when the weather is too bad to take your boat out for a day on the water? Here is something that may interest you and give you some insight on why men fish……but…you have to read it… Darwin's Bass: The Evolutionary Psychology of Fishing Man. Darwin's Bass: The Evolutionary Psychology of Fishing Man explores how fishing ties together the great web of life. Our toots as a fishing species go a long way toward explaining the attraction modern humans feel to the sport of fishing. If you or your loved one is a fisherman, Darwin's Bass offers a new understanding about the nature of a fisherman and why they do what they do. Great Stuff…..

SEPTEMBER 2008 NEWSLETTER

The general club meeting is set for Thursday September 11th at 7:30 p.m.. The meeting will be at the Oakland County Commissioners’ building.

Our condolences to Terry Melvin. His brother died last week.

Congratulations to Jason Hurst and Kirk Simpson! They qualified for the 12 man team on Lake Charlevoix. They will advance to next August’s Northern Division Championship on Lake St. Clair.

Our last tournament of the year is the Harry Hoffman Memorial Classic. Date and lake to be determined. There are 2 divisions - contestants and judges. The contestants are the top ten finishers and anyone winning a tournament who does not finish in the top ten. The judges are the next level of top finishers. If a contestant can not fish, his spot is not replaced unless there are less than 10 boats. The typical pairing is for the top angler to fish with the last qualifying judge, second place angler to fish with the second to last qualifying judge and so forth. The pairings can be changed to accommodate for boats. The contestants fish for 2/3 of the pot. The judges are fishing for 1/3 of the pot. Every spot receives a check. There is no rider’s fee. The contestants have complete control of the boat for the entire tournament. The lake is not revealed until morning breakfast. This is done so nobody can pre-fish. The lake should not be a lake we fished as a club that year. The philosophy is for the angler to demonstrate his fishing skills. The tournament director will provide a map for every boat. You must fish a minimum of 3 tournaments to be eligible to fish the classic.

We need to discuss lake selection for the Harry Hoffman Memorial Classic. Should big water be off limits? There is no rider’s fee. This can be very expensive for boat owner with today’s gas prices. An offshoot is distance. Should we restrict how far away the lake can be?

Is Walpole island open or closed for the September 14th Lower Detroit tournament?

The federation is resuming the Classic Series. Nothing is finalized. There will 4 tournaments on 2 weekends. Team-draw format. Cost is $50.00 per person per day. No classic. Higher payouts for the tournaments. The idea is for a format one step above club tournaments and learning opportunities.

There was a discussion involving late payment of the club dues at the November meeting. Currently, if you don’t pay by the November meeting, there is a $10.00 late fee. A motion was made, seconded, and passed. It is the following: “If your dues are not paid by 12/31, then you are out of the club”.
However, this is a bylaw change. The proper procedure to change the bylaw is to have the motion in writing, inform all members, and have a vote 30 days after the motion. Due to the 30 day time frame, the official vote for the motion will be taken at the January meeting. The motion is: “If your dues are not paid by January 5th, 2006, you are out of the club. In subsequent years, if your dues are not paid by 12/31, you are out of the club.”
Everyone is encouraged to attend the January meeting for your input and your vote!

The is the time for new members to apply. We need them on the club roster before the April Presidents’ meeting. Plus, they can help with The Ultimate Fishing Show at the Rock Financial Showplace in Novi.

Make sure you plan to work the Showspan show. The show is from January 12th - January 15th. Setup is on January 10th & 11th. Make sure you schedule these dates. This fundraiser differentiates our club from all others! Plus, you need to work the show to receive your full club benefits! See or contact me to schedule your time at the show.

Our condolences go out to Dale Knopsnider and Don Patton. Dale’s sister and Don’s father passed away last month.

Looking for nominations for all board positions. The vote is at the December meeting.

Congratulations to Terry Melvin, our 2006 tournament director! Bert Littlejohn is the co-director. They passed out sheets looking for suggestions. Mike Nolan, Darren St. Ledger, and Ken Turner are the other members of the tournament committee.

If you are interested in being the 2006 kids tournament director, you must write a letter to Dave Fogleman. Send it or e-mail. It must be received by the February meeting. We had a discussion regarding club membership and participation at the November meeting. There were 2 motions made and passed. The second motion dealt with participation at The Ultimate Fishing Show. A motion was offered, seconded, and subsequently passed. It is the following: “If you don’t work the Showspan show without a legitimate excuse, you won’t receive any freebies, i.e. State Championship entry fee and expense money, banquet, etc. The executive board will determine who is excused.”

The first motion is more complicated. The discussion involved late payment of the club dues.
Every club member will receive a copy of the newsletter by mail. This will be the official notification of the bylaw proposal. Everyone is encouraged to attend the January meeting for your input and your vote!

The is the time for new members to apply. We need them on the club roster before the April Presidents’ meeting. Plus, they can help with The Ultimate Fishing Show at the Rock Financial Showplace in Novi.
